What is Swine Influenza/ Swine Flu?

Swine Flu is a respiratory disease which infects pigs. It is caused by virus influenza type A. This Flu normally occurs in autumn and in winter. This disease cause high levels of illness but is rarely fatal. Swine Flu does not normally infect humans; however there are some rare cases that occur with people who have close contact with pigs.

What’s the difference?

This Swine Flu is the latest version H1N1 strain. Though H1N1 is the same strain that causes seasonal outbreaks in human, this latest version contains genetic material from strains that affect humans, bird and swine.

What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people? How does swine flu spread?

Patients will have the same symptoms as normal influenza; high fever, coughs, sneezes and body aching. This virus lives in saliva, mucous and transmission by sneezing or coughing in close range or direct with objects that have infected with virus. The virus will go into the body through eyes, and nose. This disease is not transmitted by eating pork.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?

There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza. Take these everyday steps to protect your health.

•    Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

•    Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

•    Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

•    Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

•    If you get sick with influenza. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Are there medicines to treat swine flu?

Yes. CDC recommends the use of Oseltamivir or Zanamivir for the treatment

Health Tips - Take Care of Your Health
Read on the helpful information below to know how you can protect your health!

The top five cancer-causing foods are:

1. Hot dogs
Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.

2. Processed meats and bacon
Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.

3. Doughnuts
Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.

4. French fries
Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries.

5. Chips, crackers, and cookies
All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats.

BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS

1. No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.

2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power..

3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.

4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.

7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.

10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain.

The main causes of liver damage are:

1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are main cause.

2. Not urinating in the morning.

3. Too much eating.

4. Skipping breakfast.

5. Consuming too much medication.

6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener.

7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.

8. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also add to the burden of liver. Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.

We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our bodies to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to 'schedule.'

World Schools Debating Championship - Dominating the argument!
Minara Lama - Dominating The ArgumentFive Thai teens bag the "BEST NEW TEAM" award at the World Schools Debating Championship.

GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT
»The World Schools Debating Championship was contested by 300 high school students aged 16 - 18

» 40 countries participated in this edition of an annual contest started in 1988.

» Students can argue their way into the World Schools Debating Championship with a good performance at Thailand's National Debating Championship sponsored by ABAC.

NEWS IN DETAIL

The Thai team recently won Best New Team at the World Schools Debating Championship in Athens, where 300 international students were competing. The team consists of Minara Lama (16 - NIVA International School), Pu Charernwattanakul (16 - Mahidol School), and three other students from Triam Udom Sueksa School (Lily Kittisrikangwan - 17 : Panarat Anamwathana - 17 : Venussa Poovudhikul - 18). They performed well against teams from Bermuda, Namibia, Peru, Greece, Kuwait, Estonia, and Singapore, with Ireland proving to be their fiercest competitors.

Their toughest debate was on banning smoking in public places. Given the difficult task of speaking up for smokers, the Thai team argued that smokers pay taxes so it was unfair that the government ban them when they profited from them in the first place.

Minara hopes the government will start promoting the benefits of debating, as it has really changed her. "I never used to follow the news or care about what's going on in the world, but debating forces to get involved."

To Minara Lama and the rest of the debating team, KEEP IT UP!
Health Tips - 7 DONT'S AFTER MEAL
7 DONT'S AFTER MEAL

Here are the seven things you should avoid after every meal:

1. DON'T SMOKE - Experiment from experts proves that smoking a cigarette after meal is comparable to smoking 10 cigarettes (chances of   cancer is higher).

2. DON'T EAT FRUITS IMMEDIATELY - Immediately eating fruits after meals will cause stomach to be bloated with air. Therefore take fruit 1-2 hr after meal or 1hr before meal.

3. DON'T DRINK TEA - Because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the Protein content in the food we consume to be hardened thus difficult to digest.

4. DON'T LOOSEN YOUR BELT - Loosening the belt after a meal will easily cause the intestine to be twisted & blocked.

5. DON'T BATHE - Bathing will cause the increase of blood flow to the hands, legs & body thus the amount of blood around the stomach will therefore decrease. This will weaken the digestive system in our stomach.

6. DON'T WALK ABOUT - People always say that after a meal walk a hundred steps and you will live till 99. In actual fact this is not true. Walking will cause the digestive system to be unable to absorb the nutrition from the food we intake.

7. DON'T SLEEP IMMEDIATELY - The food we intake will not be able to digest properly. Thus will lead to gastric & infection in our intestine.

Try it out and enjoy a healthy lifestyle!
